Life is too short. Find something you love to do. And do it.
Enjoying your life, each and every day, is quite simple. And there’s no secret about it.
You just have to find something you love to do.
But a lot of people seem to make this complicated. And some seem to never find true fulfillment in what they do.
If you’re lost right now, you’ve got to do a little bit of searching. And it starts with a question.
Your “Big Why”
Ah, the big WHY question.
I must warn you advance — going down this route and discovering your purpose, why you do the things you do, will lead you through a path of self discovery.
Which is a good thing. And not many people spend a lot of time searching for the answer to this fundamental question.
The answer to this questions varies in depth, and is different for everyone.
The important thing is for you to start reflecting on what your purpose is.
Think about what drives you — the reason you want to pursue your work, your project, your craft.
What Do You Want?
A sense of fulfillment? To change the world? Affect many? Become financially independent?
Part of answering the why question requires you to know what it is you want.
When you know what you want, you’ll know the reason why you’re doing something.
Here’s an example. A very personal one. And if you’re reading this, I’m really putting myself out there.
My wife and I dream about buying a home in The Beach(es) neighbourhood in Toronto.
For as long as we can imagine, this is something we’ve wanted.
We visit The Beach every week in the summer. And several times during the spring and fall.
We want to move to The Beach because we love the community, the environment, the parks where our daughter loves to play, the boardwalk, the sand, the water, the sun.
The great schools. The restaurants. The character of the houses. The location.
We want to buy a home in The Beach, have our daughter grow up there, and enjoy our lifestyle in this neighbourhood. This is what we want.
Purpose & Motivation
Knowing what you want gives you a purpose. Something to aggressively pursue.
Knowing your purpose is also a source of motivation. When you know what you need to do to pursue your purpose, you will find ways to be motivated — trust me.
I visualize living in my family’s dream neighbourhood.
I look at the big picture and know what kind of resources we need to accomplish this.
And I become motivated to pursue the achievement of this goal.
Do What You Love
I work in real estate. I’m licensed as a Broker, but my primary role is to serve as a leader.
I’ve had mundane jobs before. As a teenager I worked as a door-to-door Toronto Start salesperson. A general labourer in a metal fabrication company. A telemarketer selling prepaid legal care.
In my early 20’s I took on jobs in accounting, sales and management.
I’ve taken quite a journey to discover what I really loved to do.
But I experienced a pattern emerging in every position I’ve been employed in.
Whether I’d start in accounting, or sales — I’d always end up working alongside the leaders of the company — and eventually lead.
I love working with other people. I love learning, teaching and coaching. And I love to serve — as a leader.
Nothing is more rewarding to me than affecting the productivity, goals and livelihood of those whom I serve to lead.
And it makes it easier to pursue my goal of moving my family to The Beach by doing what I love the most: serving as a leader.
A Beach home is just one of the things I want for myself and my family — and it’s just a part of my big why (which I haven’t explored deeply here), but I hope it gives you an idea of one of the many things you could work towards.
More importantly, knowing what you want gives you the energy to actively and aggressively pursue it while doing what you love.
When these elements come together (know what you want + doing what you love), you become unstoppable.
You find a higher level of energy. Discover a greater level of fulfillment. And you become totally committed to doing whatever it takes to get what you want.
A Different Kind of Life
“When you start doing what you truly want to do, what you LOVE to do, you start living a different kind of life.”
It’s true. When you’ve explored your purpose, discovered your capabilities, and start pursuing your passion, your life changes.
Knowing what I want and what I have to do to achieve it has changed many aspects of my life.
My morning schedule. My fitness goals. Financial awareness. Productivity.
I feel my energy levels increasing constantly no matter what I’m experiencing throughout the day.
It’s time for you to change your life.
Do what you love.
